NEVER respond to Spam with "unsubscribe
requests". Mostly these requests are just used to verify an active email
address. You may appear to stop receiving mails from one offender only to have
another ten join in.
NEVER put your email address on a website. Robots travel
the net looking for such juicy email addresses and when they find them, they send you
Spam. If you are desperate to be contacted, try using:
myname 'at' something 'dot' com
rather than
myname@something.com.
I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before robots can decipher this format
too.
NEVER act on instructions which claim to be an attempt to stop
the spread of a brand new virus threat. These messages usually quote the support of
some big company, such as AOL, IBM, CNN, even Intel and Microsoft - and urge you to
help everyone in your address book by mass mailing them with a copy of the warning.
If you're still curious, or actually think the mail is genuine, CHECK
the information at the McAfee
Virus and Hoax centre.
NEVER send to a large number of people by using CC: as this
allows anyone on the list to use the list for their own purposes. This is ONLY ok if
all the people already know each other or work for the same company.
Be careful when using email forms on your website. While
they are a great way for people to get in contact with you without knowing your email
address, the forms can also be hijacked to send other people mail that looks like it comes
from your site. If you are using something like php to handle the form, there are a
number of things you can do to stop this misuse. Please read "how to stop mailform abuse" if you want to know
how this is done.
